The Horses of Neptune oil on canvas by Walter Crane, British, 1845-1915. Crane was an illustrator specialising in children’s books. Neptune was the Roman god of earthquakes, the sea and horses. He was the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Poseidon.
This painting demands to be seen on a large scale. If, as in the second example, it is in detail, it loses the visual impact of the plunging horses and the sea eventually becoming one.
